Workplace Leadership Conference

In March 2010, nearly 50 tourism supervisors and managers from across the province met at the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa Resort in Moose Jaw for the Workplace Leadership Conference.  It is the first conference of its kind that condenses the Workplace Trainer workshop into two days of training, followed by the Workplace Trainer exam.

Participants who attended the conference explored new ways of effectively training staff, from setting and achieving training objectives to developing trainees' skills.  Other topics included principles of adult learning, cultural awareness, rewards and recognition, and evaluating performance.

In addition, conference participants had the opportunity to network with colleagues and learn about human resource planning and workplace leadership from guest speakers.

The Workplace Leadership Conference was offered as part of the Transforming the Tourism Workforce project.  Also in attendance were participants of the SIGA/STEC Apprenticeship Project.

Testimonials

"My training philosophy is empowering employees and leading by example.  Those are two things I've set my standards at because it's not about me, it's about them.  I believe that if you are continually practicing what you preach, employees will see that and pick it up.  How can I expect [my] staff to do training if I don't participate myself?  That's leading by example."

"Training in general gives that empowered feeling.  For example, one time this high business exec forgot her Blackberry charger, so her life was over as far as she was concerned.  But because we had such good training and orientation, I knew there [was] a box of chargers people leave in the hotel all the time.  So, I grabbed her Blackberry, went down, found a charger in about two minutes and made this lady's week.  All because my orientation told me that was there if I needed it."
