How to Find a Job
If you have the personality and training for a career in tourism, there is only one thing left to do… Find a job!
Here’s how:
- Read your local newspaper regularly. Keep an eye open for new restaurants, hotels and museums, expansions of existing establishments, and upcoming events.
- Check your local Human Resource Centre for job postings.
- If you have access to the Internet, use it to search for jobs online. Visit STEC's online Job Board or saskjobs.ca to see what tourism-related jobs are available in Saskatchewan.
- If a particular job interests you, find out what qualifications are required. Search the Internet, talk to the manager of a business where these jobs exist or visit your local information centre or Chamber of Commerce. This will give you a good introduction to tourism businesses in your community.
- Always have an up-to-date resume on hand that highlights your education, training, work experience, volunteer activities, and special skills; for example, the ability to speak a second language.
- Drop in at a local business with your resume.
- Network by attending industry events and career fairs. This may lead to meetings with people in the tourism sector to discuss your job prospects.
- If you do not initially find work, consider volunteering your time. You'll gain experience that can be added to your resume and the people you meet can provide you with job leads.
Many tourism jobs are not advertised, so it pays to visit local tourism businesses in person to see if they are hiring or expect to be hiring soon. Going in person also gives you the opportunity to ask about the different types of jobs available in the tourism sector.
When applying for a job in tourism, remember that a positive attitude and a willingness to learn new skills are two of the most important qualities that employees are looking for.
