Saskatchewan’s
Tourism Sector

Saskatchewan’s tourism sector is continually growing and expanding.  Ours is a dynamic industry with many opportunities for career advancement, professional development, and personal achievement.

Here we provide you with a snapshot of Saskatchewan’s tourism sector.

  • Saskatchewan’s tourism sector employs about 57,000 people - with about 20,000 supported entirely by tourism.

  • Travelers spent an estimated  $1.634  billion in Saskatchewan in 2009, an increase of  2.9% over 2008.

  • There were over 8.9 million same-day and overnight or longer visits made within the province in 2009, an increase of 5.5% over 2008.  Saskatchewan residents accounted for most of these increases.  Our residents made more than three million overnight or longer trips in the province last year, an increase of 9% over 2008.

  • Saskatchewan also saw an increase of 13% in visits from the United States.  It is believed that this increase was a result of the new direct flights from Chicago and Denver bringing in more visitors.  United States entries by road continued to decline in 2009.

  • There was a decrease in both visits and expenditures from Alberta in 2009 as the Alberta economy contracted for the first time in a number of years.  Overnight or longer visits to Saskatchewan by Albertans decreased 6% and their expenditures decreased 28% from 2008 levels.  The recession in 2009 had a negative impact on travel by Albertans.

  • There was also a decrease in visits from Manitoba and other parts of Canada in 2009.

Data was obtained from Statistics Canada.
Quick Facts
In August 2011, tourism-related employment accounted for 11% of total employment in the province.

Industry Professionals Say
"
It is important that we  be able to demonstrate the value of the tourism sector, in terms of both economic and employment benefit to Saskatchewan.  This is done through ongoing research provincially, as well as through our  partnerships on a national and international basis. "
