Accommodation

Accommodation is one of the fastest growing industries in tourism.  In 2006, there were 191,500 people working in hotels and other lodging operations throughout Canada.  In the coming years, this number is expected to continue growing.

The growth in the accommodation industry can be attributed to:

  • demand for lodging beyond traditional seasons.
  • growth in large chain operations.
  • increased interest in vacation or time-sharing.
  • greater global interest in Canada as a tourism destination.

The benefits of this growth are being reaped by those looking for careers in tourism.  New jobs are being created, career paths are accelerating, and opportunities for careers in different regions and establishments are increasing.

The most common occupations in this industry are Front Desk Agents and Housekeeping Room Attendants.  Fitness trainers have also begun working in the accommodation industry, as more and more hotels equip their facilities with fitness centres.
